The Barber of Seville is an opera by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini taken from the comedy of the same name by Beaumarchais.
The original title is Almaviva, or is unnecessary precaution. The book had already been the year before to music by Francis Morley. Before him, Giovanni Paisiello had put scene in his Barber of Seville in 1782.
The first performance took place on February 20, 1816 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome, and ended between the whistles. To provoke them, according to the gossip of the time, would have been the managers of a competitor's theater, Teatro Valle, according to others, it was the fault of some followers of Paisiello and his version of the work. The mere announcement that he was preparing a new version of Rossini's Barber of Seville had aroused many controversies, partly because of the fact that at the time Paisiello was still alive.
The fiasco of the first but was immediately rescued by the success of the replicas, and the work of Rossini was soon to eclipse the previous version of Paisiello.
Giovanni Paisiello or Paesiello (Roccaforzata, May 9, 1740 - Naples, June 5, 1816) was an Italian composer of the Classical period. He was one of the most important and influential opera composers of the eighteenth century.
